Day 5 - A Question....

OK, this post is a bit weak. We had friends visit over the weekend, which meant the housework had to be amped up. As a result, the sewing stopped and I haven't got back to it yet.

So this post is dedicated to a Retromummy Giveaway I won about a month ago. I had been having a bad day when I 'won' so it definitely improved my mood. I received these charm square packs in the mail the next day....

Within a day I had sewn up a little pram quilt top.... in preparation for some babies that were being born. We didn't know the sex of any of the babies, so wanted to be 'prepared' when they arrived. Of course 2 out of 2 babies so far have been boys, so the 'girl' finished quilt is still waiting to be made up.

So, 'the question'.... I can't be the only person with hobbies who struggles with housework?? Is the only way to have a showroom home to just not have hobbies? Or kids? Unfortunately in our house, both my husband and I have hobbies (and 2 kids). Hence we have 'stuff' - and stuff makes mess. When the kids are finally in bed, I would just rather be doing something for me, rather than cleaning. Oh, and I am also crappy with my time....

You are not alone! I can have a clean house (never showroom though! My girls take care of that!) and no sewing/knitting/other craft or I can sew, knit and create and the housework suffers! I know which way i am happier though!

I am lucky to have a big enough business to have a dedicated studio, a big one, which you can close the doors on. My tip to have a life, a clean home & a bunch of children - no toys in the living area, keep it an adult looking zone & keep the toys in the children's bedrooms. If they are small & play with toys in the main living space, keep the toys in a nice basket with a lid or move it back into their room at night. This will make the evenings remind you that you are also a wife, not just a mother & cleaner. Finally, our policy is if i'm working, so is my husband, so i work & clean & parent while he's at work, then when he's home, he cooks while i do homework & tidy, so once they go to their rooms everything is done. Having a very uncluttered & easy to clean home is essential, have a dedicated day each week to sort things out & if you want to craft, you have to have a dedicated area or cupboard with your equipment plugged in ready to go, or you'll not do half the things you want if you have to spend ages setting up & packing away each time. Good luck, love Posie

Thank goodness Dean doesn't have any hobbies except occasionally playing the xbox on our bed, there isn't enough space or time to clean up y hobbies let alone his. Our home is NEVER looking like a showroom, except maybe if I know people are coming over well enough in advance (ie. days and days in advance!)

Nope not alone, give me craft over a showroom home anyway!!!
Although my husband wouldn't agree ;)

I think to have a "show room clean home" cleaning needs to be your hobby. I'm glad I have a much more interesting hobby than that!

Mmm well as you know I like to have a tidy house, although not a showroom home. My hobbies/interests don't create lots of mess either (example exercise which is out of the house). That said my motto good organisation, everything has a place and that is where it goes away. I don't ever leave things lying around as it is much quicker to put things where they belong than having to have a massive cleanup when things get out of hand. I pestered my mum to take this approach with her craft room (many messy hobbies covered in there) and she was delighted with the results... The other advantage to this approach is that I can 9 times out of 10 find something/know exactly where something will be... This is also why I can have people over at a moments notice and the house is ready to go. Renae :-)
