Well that was another big break. I have been sewing.... building up a bit of a stash of finished girls clothes. And now it is depleted...... birthdays and Christmas will do that to you.

I did take a couple of pictures of what I had been making..... but not of individual items as such. Hopefully I can pictures of the them on the little girls in the future.

One week left of holidays and then James is starting Year 1, and my baby Layla will start preschool 2 days a week. I was hoping this would mean time to sew. We'll see..... apparently some people want me to do 'work' - shock horror.

Actually no, not really.

Just as I was getting ready to get back into Blogtoberfest, my husband downloaded some 'Lion' thingy to the computer and chewed up all our broadband limit. Hence, no blogging, no searching, no internet (I dislike the fact that we are charged up to $200 to continue to use our internet after we reach our limit).

Back online now, after Blogtoberfest has finished. That is OK, I have a few things I can blog in the near future to make up for it.

Big Girls Bed

Layla will be 3 in a couple of months. I only toilet-trained her a month ago. I know, pretty 'late'. But I had such a bad experience with James that I just didn't want to start. I am also a lazy parent. As it turns out, she has been a dream to toilet-train. So good in fact that she has been waking up dry in the morning. Of course the next step would be to take the night nappy of her. Only problem..... she is still in the cot. Once again, that was due to having such a bad experience when we moved James to a bed.

So first step in night training was to move Layla into her big bed. The big bed has actually been in her room since June (when James got a new midi-bed). Only ever referred to as her 'dolls bed' though.

We made the move a week ago. Rather than just jumping out of bed in the morning, we have told her to call out to us. So far it is working. Like most things with Layla, they are just easier. In the mornings, she calls out "Cock-a-doodle-doo" to let us know it is time to get up. Don't ask me where she got that from, but it is hilarious....

Back on Track

I have been off the planet this past week. Death in the family, death of an online friends' son. Sisters engagement. Funeral for family member, which involved reuniting with family members we had not seen or spoken to in 15-20 years. And I joined Weight Watchers. It has all been a bit too much at times.

So hopefully, I can jump back in where I left off and continue Blogtoberfest. Hopefully.

Ice Cream Dress

Well, I tried to post this last night, but it kept freezing up. Will try again....

This is Layla's most recent 'Mum-made' dress. She does love it. And more and more she is pointing to her cupboard (rather than her chest of drawers) and telling me she wants to wear a dress. If this Sydney weather would warm up she actually might get to wear all of them. The great thing about dresses is that they will often get 2 summers out of them, or at least a summer and a winter (with a long sleeve top and tights underneath).

So this is the Ice Cream Dress pattern by Oliver + S. Size 3. Fabrics were purchased from the Fabricworm website...... Michael Miller, Forest Life Aqua, annndddd something else (butterfly print).

Yes, I have been counting Coles Sports for Schools vouchers. Argh.....

I got through the bag that I had - 2300 vouchers there.

I just feel very sorry for the lady at school who volunteered to do the counting. At the end of last term she had counted 27000 vouchers. Apparently she went home with another 4 bags worth on Monday. My contribution was one full bag. I think I will have to offer to give her some more help.

Daddy has gone to NZ

My husband has headed off to Wellington today to see a game of Rugby tomorrow night that his beloved Wallabies are not even playing in. Yes, that is right. He and his mates booked a weekend away in NZ and bought tickets ($400 each mind you) for a game the the Wallabies failed to qualify for. Then there is the $900 flight, $700 in accommodation. Plus spending money. All for 2 nights away in the windy city.The Wallabies are however now playing the following day. However my husband will already be on the plane back home when they start playing.

If I said I was annoyed it really would be an understatement. I just need to plan my 'compensation' (I think he is up to 4 boys weekends away in the past 3 years, to my ZERO girls weekends away). I can't decide if I should take off and leave him with the kids for a week/end. Or buy myself something significant (think Kitchenaid). All suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Gok Wan

I will start this by saying, I do not have Foxtel. I have never felt the need for it, and our 'budget' is stretched enough without adding another monthly bill. So all I knew of Gok was his ad's for Westfield. And he did seem quite serious on the ad's.

Now over the years I have managed to get tickets to see Carson Kressley and Trinny and Susannah at Westfield. These shows are open to everyone, but if you are lucky, you can get a seat to see the show. Just a nice addition since you normally have to get there quite early to be able to see the show properly.

So the other day Westfield sent out an email offering tickets to the show. I jumped on it. My sister and I went along, and got front row seats. Woo hoo! And a great goodie bag!

The show started with Donny Galella checking a few audience members to determine their body shape. Westfield has a new Body Shape Calculator. You can enter your measurements into the boxes and it determines your body shape - fantastic!

Next came Gok. Well he was fantastic. He is an absolute natural, and so funny. Now I am a Gok fan. A number of audience members were made over during the hour long show. And I will be finding out how I can see his TV show without having to sign up to Pay TV.
I will just say, sorry for the very average photos. The bright white screens at the back of the stage made it difficult to take good photos from the where I was sitting.

My Little Man

My little man is a complex human. I struggle to understand him most of the time. He likes to dance, and sing, and be loud. He is outgoing and confident. And he is male. All the things that I am not, or at least he is everything I wasn't when I was a child (well I am definitely still not male). He is also smart.... sometimes too smart for his own good. He is 6 afterall.

One of his all time favourite movies is Mary Poppins. So we handed over the $$$ (well my Mum bought James his ticket) and off we went last week to see the musical in Sydney. Well it was over a week ago actually. And my goodness, we are still hearing about it.... almost all day every day. We wake up to him singing at the top of his voice.... Supercalifragilisticxpialidocious, Chim Chim Cheree etc etc. Then the days are filled with him trying to get his little sister to play Mary Poppins and Bert. So I just thought I would share a photo of him waiting for the train after the show.... reading the menu from Charlie & Co. Burgers of course.

Guerilla Knitting

In June, I escaped my kids for the first night ever..... yes, my first night away from my kids in 6 years (not including the night I spent in hospital in labour with baby no. 2). I attended a wedding for my cousin in Townsville. It was a quick trip..... just one night away, with a wedding and reception and family breakfast the next day. But it was so wonderful to thaw out. The weather in Sydney at that stage had been COLD. COLD and WINDY. The horrible rains hadn't started at that stage. But the cold was more than I can handle. Townsville was about 24'C and warmer in the afternoon sun.

On the walk from the hotel to the wedding reception I noticed a fancy tree - one that had been attacked guerilla knitting style.

Now, as we live about 15 minutes drive inland, we never see the sun rise over the ocean. Perhaps if I could get out of bed early enough, I would see it. But in Townsville, we stayed right across from the water. It was the most amazing thing to wake up to the sunrise. My sister and I shared a room, and I even asked her if I could take the single bed as it meant that I could open the curtain in the morning and lay in bed watching the sunrise, lol.

I have lots to blog, but will start slowly. I haven't been doing a LOT, but I have been sewing. It is more just school, and a stint of work through June, and now school holidays that has been holding me back. I envy those people that have even one day a week break from the kids. Unfortunately I do not. So any sewing is squeezed in here and there.
And while my lovely daughter is pretty easy, she has pretty much stopped napping..... from 2 hour naps to nothing, just like that. Of course, afternoons are 'difficult' as she is extra whingey and clingy now. Oh well, it will pass in time. And fingers crossed we can get a place for her to attend preschool next year.

In the mean time, I will blog just one of my sewing projects.

The pattern is from Wink Designs. I won a copy of this pattern at Sew It Together, and got to speak to Marina as she worked on her very pretty hexagons.

A month or so ago I realised that Layla had lots of summer dresses, but no winter dresses. She had been living in jeans. And really, who wouldn't in this very cold Sydney winter that we had been experiencing. But really, she did need a dress. I had purchased a few 'stock' fabrics (ones that I had no immediate plans for but I knew would come in handy) from The Fabric Store. For this dress I used 2 denim weight fabrics, which was fine for the dress, but impossible when it came to using it for the ties. I used ribbon for the ties instead.

I realised that I only photographed one side of this dress. I will put up a photo of the reverse at a later date, if I get one. I have a feeling the spotty side will be our favourite.

I have been on a bit of a sewing-roll lately. To be honest, I have been sewing quite a bit for myself. But carrying an extra 15kg means I don't really do the clothes justice, even if I am happy with the sewing and the finished garment. Adding to that, my husband really doesn't take nice photos of me..... at least he doesn't seem to look at the photos he has taken to advise me that I need to turn my body a bit, or retake the photo cause the way I am standing draws attention to my stomach. He took 2 photos of me tonight in which there was NO light in the pic. Hey, just for the fun of it, I will post the pic, so you will know what I am talking about......

Yep, that is what I am dealing with.
Anyway, edited version.....

This is the Tessuti free pattern. I have more fabric to make a couple more versions of these too. I think they will be my staple for winter. I am sure they look better on someone smaller than me, but at least they cover the belly and muffin top, and are super comfortable.... just make sure you choose a cotton-rich fabric.

I also picked up some Eric Carle The Very Hungry Caterpillar fabric from a local quilt shop. I LOVE it. I decided to make up a cushion for my kids and my niece and nephew for Easter (rather than going overboard on chocolate). I really like the finished product.

P.S. don't worry there will definitely be chocolate in our house at Easter, just trying to cut back a little (for the kids). And perhaps if I cut back I wouldn't have 15kg to lose....

A Little Oliver+S

Earlier this year I bought up a huge range of fabrics from overseas (pretty sure it was QuiltHome that I bought from). Amongst my haul was some of the lovely Oliver+S fabrics..... including the pink knit fabric. The problem is that I am not a lover of sewing knit fabrics. Lack of experience really. However, with winter coming I thought I really need to bite the bullet and get some winter clothes whipped up for Layla in particular (James is covered with school uniforms for most of the week now, yay!).

So I went ahead and cut out a long sleeve top from the Oliver+S Hopscotch pattern. I forgot to put the walking foot on the machine for the hems (the way I 'do' knits), but overall I am VERY happy with the result. It was a particularly easy pattern to assemble, and I will be making more for winter.

I can't believe it has taken me so long to post this. I took the photos during a 'blog break' so it kind of got lost in the system. Late last year I got to meet Christy to hand deliver the pattern that she 'won' from my blog giveaway. Turns out we live not far from each other. And she was so lovely to give me the following gift.....

All made by Christy..... beautiful binding and crocheted trim. I am still waiting to find the perfect project for them. I don't think I could possibly use them on a present for someone else (I am too selfish) - they will be used on something for Layla.

I was lucky enough to spend Saturday with all the girls at Sew It Together. I missed out last year as we were in Hong Kong for the weekend that it was held, so I really didn't know what to expect.

Saturday morning was spent at the Menzies Hotel 'sewing'..... actually, I didn't get much sewing done. I did do a lot of talking, eating, talking, and admiring of others projects. I was so pleased to catch up with Cass, Ingrid and Christy again. I was just as pleased to finally meet Karen, Helen and Kylie (who I have known online for a long time). And lets not forget all the new friends like Rachel, who I managed to see again on Monday at Spotlight (of course).

I participated in a Hand Pieced Quilting session with Kathy from Material Obsession in the afternoon (by which stage I was exhausted) which was fun.

I came home with a massive haul of swap items, giveaways, freebies, and purchases......

There is only one thing missing from the big picture, and that is an Owl Kit that I chose as a prize, donated my Claire from Craft Schmaft..... which has already been made up and claimed by James (yes he is 5.5 but he still loves softies).

The item I made for the swap was a 'necklace' - not really sure what to call it.....

Since it is now time for school pick up, I will have to leave it there for now. Will be back with a more detailed post of the stash I came home with and DINNER.....

I am trying really hard not to let external factors get me down, but they do. The natural events that have occurred over the last few months seem to stop me in my boots at times. Before I know it, a week has passed without having achieved much at all. Then when I do achieve something crafty, there are just set backs which make me doubt what I have done (is it all worth the effort??).

Anyway, I think everything has been cleared up now.... goods received, money paid, and apart from the small earthquake which apparently just hit Wellington (where my husband is due to head later this year for the Rugby World Cup) I think I am ready to move on again.

I am heading to the Sew It Together meet this month, and joined in with the Name Tag Swap. Name tag has now been received by the recipient, so I will post the picture of the name tag here.

I have also been settling in to my new 'life' as the Mum of a school student. I have actually felt like it has been a pretty big adjustment for me (James has had no trouble settling in). My day is cut so short, with drop off, pick up and a toddler sleep in between. So much for all the sewing time I thought I was going to have, lol.

I think he is up to 7 merit certificates, an SRC award for 'Respect' (of all things) and he was elected SRC rep for his Kindy class. On top of that he has had a great transition - 5.5 years of torturing us has finally paid off.

And for good measure, my gorgeous, but very clingy (said with gritted teeth) Layla.

Queensland Flood Relief Appeal Auction

NOTE - just to bring this Auction in line with all the others, the Auction will now end at 9pm on Monday the 24th of January, 2011. Not long now.....

What a week of devastation in this country. Living so far from the flood damaged region does make it hard to help in a hands on way (seeing all those local Brisbane residents on the news pitching in with the clean up brought a tear to my eye tonight). But the crafting community are doing what we do best - Making Stuff!!!

Toni from Make It Perfect is coordinating a crafty fundraising venture.

My contribution is a dress that I have made which is up for Auction on my blog.
Details are as follows.....
The dress was made by me - using the Modkid Kyoko pattern. Fabric is the Hunky Dory range by Moda Fabrics.
It is a size 4, but really, I would say 3-5 year old could wear it. The dress is loose in style with the obi which ties around the waist to make it 'adjustable'.
Dress is finished inside with French Seams.

Since I don't have a 4 year old to model, I have shown the dress on both the 2 year old and the 5.5 year old, so you can see sizing.

The Auction will run as follows:

Goodbye 2010 - Looking Forward to 2011

As much as I have been sewing a lot more this year (a positive) there are been a few things going on in the background here to cause me to 'misplace' my focus at times.

2011 will be about "moving forward". In regards to family, James will start school in February.

He also started dancing this year, and will be continuing in 2011..... Hip Hop, Contemporary, Ballet.... it has given him a real boost to start something that he enjoys so much.

Layla will also start dancing - yep, I am loving having a little girl!

James also went to Drama classes again this year, which finished off with a fantastic Christmas party.... one of the highlights of our year.....

Layla turned 2 at the beginning of the month..... my little angel.

Then we could start to focus on Christmas....

And to finish, a quick pic of my nephew in his new hat that I made.

The Countdown to Christmas

Well, my husband decided to put the Christmas tree up early this year. Apparently the tree lighting in Martin Place means our tree can go up. Using his theory, we could probably start putting up decorations in October. I should explain that he did not grow up in Australia, or really celebrate Christmas growing up. For the first 6 years or so that we were together he would ask the same question every year.... "Which day do we have to give presents?". I think he 'gets' the present thing now, as I am sure he hears me answering the same question from James.

The tree going up definitely put the wind up me though...... so much to do, so little time.
First up, I needed to finish the stocking for Layla.

Then I finished some Christmas bunting.

And a dress for Layla (although this is not the official photograph, just a happy snap that Alex took).

After all that I needed to sew something for myself (I get selfish like that). A dress. Yet to be photographed.

Finally, I thought I would add in a picture of a drawing that my husband completed. It will be going to a family member for a Christmas present. Apparently the pencils he is using aren't the 'right' pencils though, so he is getting new pencils for Christmas.

The next few weeks are going to be a sewing frenzy. I have completed some Christmas presents, but still have a long way to go.

Christmas Present Sewing

Since my niece is off to school next year, I thought I would make her a party dress as a Christmas present (for all those birthday parties I hear Kindy kids go to) rather than buy a toy that she will be much to busy to use.

I used the Kyoko pattern again. It really is very easy to sew up. I am a 'slow/particular' sewer. I am not into rushing a project. But this dress only took me a day to cut and sew - obviously I am not sewing all day, just when the kids are in bed. So it is a pretty quick sew really.

Since my sister won't visit this blog, I will post a picture now (on the hanger) and hopefully a get an action shot after Christmas.

He Who Shouts the Loudest.....

Since Layla doesn't know any better (yet) she tends to miss out on getting new things at times. As much as I do sew for her, if James wants something sewn for him, he wants it now! So Layla tends to get the 2nd version of things I make (sometimes a few months later).

In this case, James saw me preparing the Christmas Stockings and wanted the first version....... so here it is......

Not too happy with how the fabric shows through in this picture. It is not as bad in real life though, so I think I will live with it.

Off to work on Layla's stocking now.... after all, I don't have a few months to complete this version.

Sydney sees Summer.....

Well, it seems it was a short lived excitement, as the clouds are rolling in now. But this morning we woke up to a very warm day. After James' dance class, I thought it might be time to bring out the Slip and Slide we bought earlier this year. The kids had a ball. Until the fights started over the mini-boogie board. At this stage Layla ran inside into her bedroom and was madly trying to get the cushion that Cass made for her when she was born (it was in her cot)..... she seemed to think it would make a good alternative to the boogie board. Hmm, no.

Thank you to all of you who commented on my post from yesterday. Where possible I will try to reply directly to you. But I don't think I can reply to Joni, so just wanted to say thank you. I am also hoping to get back to playgroup next year with my daughter (who currently has no activities of her own or any friends to call her own).

Now, I ordered a bundle of patterns from the Vogue/McCalls/Butterick group a couple of weeks ago. About a week earlier I had been to Spotlight and paid around $40 for 2 patterns. I know, I am an idiot!! When I saw the prices on the US website, and the current exchange rate, I couldn't resist. Despite the fact that I paid $25 for postage (now what a rip off is that!), I still managed to have 7 Vogue and McCalls patterns delivered for $50. However, silly "never-even-been-bleached-blonde" me accidentally ordered 2 of the exact same pattern. So, I will give one away.

It is a bit specific though..... the pattern is Vogue 1120, but in the larger size range (14-22). Also, since I have already paid a heap in postage to get it here, I might just make it a local (Australian giveaway). I will keep this one open until Friday night. And I guess just to keep things separate, any entries for this giveaway won't be entered in the bigger/destash giveaway (just in case the same person were to win both - I would prefer to spread the love). Of course, everyone is welcome to enter both separately.

So I have been MIA lately. Just from the blog. To be honest, it all comes down to motivation, and trying to work out my place in the world. Basically, I think I have been retreating from society over the last few years, and have come to a point where I don't really know where I fit in.

I am sure other stay-at-home-Mum's must go through this sometimes, but at the moment, there are weeks when the only interaction I have with other adults during the day is a wave to other parents at daycare drop off. There are no phone calls or emails to get me through the day. No courses to go to, no meet-ups to keep me going.

Days are filled with driving my son to dancing, daycare, swimming, Cantonese lessons and drama class. On the quiet days we get to do the grocery shopping. I live in an area where I never just bump into people I know down at the shops, so even chance encounters are incredibly rare.

The only thing that I do for myself is sewing. Once again a solitary event. In a room away from little hands.....

Wild Weekend

So I haven't blogged for a few days.... just busy and feeling a bit blah!

The weather was wild in Sydney this weekend. James and I had to rug up as we headed into the city to see The Nutcracker on Saturday. It was performed by the Russian Ballet and as an introduction to ballet, it was brilliant. There were lots of little girls and boys there with their parents and grandparents. Of course James had a million questions about the story, so we spent the whole time whispering to each other. This outing was actually initiated by James who had been looking over his fathers shoulder as he flicked through the paper. James spotted the ad for the ballet and brought the paper in to me asking if we could go. Why not! He started dance classes last term and is really enjoying it, so I thought it might encourage him to try a bit harder with his dance practice. So far, so good.

I also went to the airport to pick up my parents on Sunday after their trip to Europe. This was their 2nd attempt at the trip, as they had booked earlier in the year but had to cancel at the last minute (as in the night before) due to the volcano activity that occurred in April, cancelling all flights to Europe. I am so pleased that they finally got a chance to go. Of course, they brought back presents, including these t-shirts for the kids. So cute!

Macaroons - Fail

I made the basic vanilla macaroon, with my husband requesting the 'Lemon Curd' filling. Perhaps it was the weather here that had an affect, but either way, it wasn't perfect by a long shot.

We are currently scoffing the reject batch.....

The Peacock Dress

I have been taking my time on this dress, as the fabric was a bugger to work with (initially). The fabric was purchased from Spotlight about a year ago. I bought a heap of it, because I had planned to make a top for my sister for Christmas, and then thought it would look brilliant in a maxi-dress for me. Well, I cut out the top for my sister, put my 'stretch-sewing' needles and walking foot into the machine, and that's where things went wrong. I just could not get the fabric to sew nicely. Skipping stitches all over the place. I actually wasn't sure if it was a problem with the fabric. It is a Polyester/Spandex single jersey knit, but it felt like it may have been over stentered...there just wasn't a lot of stretch left in the fabric.

I did eventually pick up some ball point needles, a lovely maxi-dress pattern (McCalls 6070) and set about cutting out a dress for me. And what do you know, it worked. The dress is incredibly comfortable, and I am glad I went down a size (or 2) as it is a perfect fit. The only 'issue' I have with it is that it feels a little short. Ankle skimming, rather than floor length. But in reality, I always struggle with floor length maxi's as the hem tends to catch on whatever shoes I am wearing.

So, can anyone tell me the difference between stretch sewing and ball point needles? I know ball point needles are for knits, but I am guessing now that stretch sewing needles might be for woven fabrics that contain spandex/lycra??

New Shoesssss

After seeing these shoes on Corrie's blog and the comments that followed, I had to order some for Layla. With the Australian dollar so strong at the moment, it was definitely worth buying them online from Me and My Feet - around a $25 saving compared to buying from Australia..... and without the hassle of driving over half and hour to the closest stockist/dealing with parking/having to drag 2 kids with me.

Now that we have the first pair, I would definitely consider buying more of these shoes for Layla and possibly myself in the future. But for now, Layla will be enjoying her pale pink pair.... a perfect match for most of her summer outfits.

A Lovely Afternoon in the City

Now there are no pictures for this post. Sorry. But I just had to share that I was lucky enough to meet up with Novy today as she is visiting Sydney. I was lucky enough to just have to take one child in with me (my husband had the day off work so baby was left at home). James and I caught the train into the city. Met up with my sister as she happened to be on her lunch break as we arrived in the city. And then got to meet up with Novy and her two kids.

After knowing each other online for about 4 years, it was so great so be able to meet in person. Conversation was easy, and the kids got on like a house on fire. Seriously, anyone would think they had known each other for years.

We did manage a trip to Kinokuniya, and of course I never walk away from there empty-handed.

James really did not stop talking all the way into the city, and all the way home, and didn't really stop in the city. When I commented to him "You really do talk a lot don't you!" He said, "Well that is how kids learn things, by asking lots of questions". I guess I just need to develop more patience, because he is right.... he is just trying to learn.

Catch-up Day 9

Well, I am late with Day 9 post. Yesterday involved a 1st birthday party for a friends little girl, which I made a double batch of cupcakes for. And then rushing home to drop off the family before heading to our closest 'big' shopping centre to quickly buy some pants that I could wear out to a pub/dinner thing last night.

I wore the new pants with this top.

And I actually got complimented on the top by a girl who had lived in London and "Had a top with the exact same print - slightly different shape, but the same print". She had bought her top from a very exclusive French shop in London (on sale) and had worn it for years before getting a stain on it recently. She was wanting to replace the top I believe. Then I got asked "Where did you get it from?" Don't you love when you can say "I made it!"

Couch to 5K

Catching up with friends on the weekend, I was amazed to see how good our friend looked. She had twin boys last year, and is looking fantastic now - the best we have seen her in the 8 years we have known her. Turns out she has been running.

Personally I have had a gym membership for over a year now and barely used it. But we have our own treadmill so thought, that is it, time to get on the treadmill. I was actually worried that I might have a heart attack the first time I tried to run. Seriously.

Anyway, I had the Couch to 5K app on my iPhone, so thought I may as well use it. It basically involves working though a program which slowly build you up to being able to run.

I survived Day 1 of the program, and actually felt quite good. I have now survived Day 2. Honestly I am surprised I am not dead, I am really unfit.

Layla on the other hand..... well she is fine, but she came so close to being one of those horrible new stories about children getting injured on the treadmill. She came into the room (she had been next door at my mother-in-laws house) when I was finishing my last minute of the program and was actually touching the mat as I continued to walk. When I realised she was there I freaked out, stopped the machine, she cried..... out of fear. Thank goodness she was not hurt. So there you go.... a warning to you all. And an admission that I truly am a bad mother.

My little baby is approaching 2. I can't stop time, and I am not even sure that I want to, but I really do love the little baby that she was and the little girl she is turning into.

I was browsing though our photos on the computer the other day and remembering what Layla was like when she was smaller. Of course we have hundreds (maybe a 1000??) photos of Layla, but I just thought I would share some that had been taken by a good friend - Tanya Tindale. We are lucky to have a photographer friend that we can trust to take photos when we want them.....

The Number 6

I have given up on trying to get pictures of some things I have made - on my body. I have gone for the 'hanger shot' instead. They probably look better on the hanger anyway.

First up is a dress that I made earlier this year to go out for dinner for my 10th wedding anniversary. Pattern is McCall's 5622 - looks like it is now out of print. I wasn't sure which version to go with when I bought the fabric from The Fabric Store. When I finally placed the pattern pieces down, I realised that I wouldn't have enough fabric for Version C. I headed back to the store to find the fabric sold out - argh!

So I went for Version B adding a black band at the bottom. I was happy enough with the result, but as with most things I sew, it was too big around the neckline. I managed to hide a couple of little pleats in the gathered neckline. Also, this dress hangs very wide. I probably would have taken it in about 5cm on each side, had I not painstakingly handstitched the bottom border in place.

Now despite the fact that I didn't have enough fabric left for the bottom of the dress, I did have enough to make up a top the other day.

I first saw this pattern on Suzy's blog and although I am not pregnant, I still look like I could be, so figured this top could be good for summer.

I can see this pattern being one that I use again and again. I loved the result. Now for the warmer Syndey weather to return so I can start to wear it....

Day 5 - A Question....

OK, this post is a bit weak. We had friends visit over the weekend, which meant the housework had to be amped up. As a result, the sewing stopped and I haven't got back to it yet.

So this post is dedicated to a Retromummy Giveaway I won about a month ago. I had been having a bad day when I 'won' so it definitely improved my mood. I received these charm square packs in the mail the next day....

Within a day I had sewn up a little pram quilt top.... in preparation for some babies that were being born. We didn't know the sex of any of the babies, so wanted to be 'prepared' when they arrived. Of course 2 out of 2 babies so far have been boys, so the 'girl' finished quilt is still waiting to be made up.

So, 'the question'.... I can't be the only person with hobbies who struggles with housework?? Is the only way to have a showroom home to just not have hobbies? Or kids? Unfortunately in our house, both my husband and I have hobbies (and 2 kids). Hence we have 'stuff' - and stuff makes mess. When the kids are finally in bed, I would just rather be doing something for me, rather than cleaning. Oh, and I am also crappy with my time....

Getting Wear Out of the Top

I made a top for Layla when she was a baby..... born in December, it was a summer top that could be worn in winter with a top underneath.

Well 2 years later, it still fits!! Yay, that will be 3 summers that she will be able to wear it. Love it!

Grumble, Grumble, Grumble....

I don't think I normally complain too much on this blog. But since October is a long month, I thought I should put a complaint in now, get it out of the way and move on.

My son had a dress up birthday party to go to today. It was a fairy party. He was going to be the only boy. That is not a problem, it really doesn't worry him. Of course he would need a 'new' dress up outfit, as we didn't think 'Racing car driver'/Wizard/Superman would cut it at a fairy party. So off we went to Spotlight on 'Sale Day' to look for an Elf costume. There were no Elf costumes... grumble.

We settled on a "Woody" costume..... no price attached.... full price $50, sale price $40..... grumble, grumble.

After wearing the Woody costume for half an hour, there are already snags appearing in the cheap polyester fabric...... grumble, grumble, grumble.

What have I learnt from this?? Make it yourself, lazybones. I have actually got plans to replicate this one in a much sturdier non-snagging fabric. I will take my time, and get it right. Because I am not paying $40 for rubbish in future.

Of course despite all this grumbling by me, James loves looking like Woody. And I think he looks pretty cute too.

Wet and Rainy Long Weekend

This first pattern I found in a stash of patterns that my Mum gave me. To be honest I had no idea if they were hers or if they had been passed to her at some stage, but after showing her the finished product she assured me that she used this pattern to make a dress or two for my sisters and I. I was so excited when I pulled it out that it was actually a size 2.... perfect for Layla this summer! Fabric is from The Fabric Store again...

This top doesn't come up too well in the pictures, but it is based on pattern that I can't lay my hands on at the moment to give any details about.... yes the sewing room is still a mess....

Layla follows instructions fairly well. "Can you get your shoes please" "Can you get a cup out of the drawer please, and a lid". But when it comes to modelling, forget it. She just wants to stand where SHE wants to stand, and look where SHE wants to look. Haha, she will get there.

First up is the Oliver & S free ruffle halter pattern, made using some fabric from The Fabric Store. If you live in Sydney and haven't visited here, check it out. They have a great range of fabrics (manufacturer short ends I believe) at great prices.

And next is the ModKid Kyoko pattern made up in the Swanky range by Moda fabrics.... bought from The Remnant Warehouse. Another fantastic Sydney fabric shop. I just LOVE how the dress came out. It didn't look anything special on its own, but when the obi went on, it just 'made' the dress.

My sewing room clean up is continuing, and I have a little pile of half yards, fat quarters etc. Will have a bit more of a look through the piles of fabric tonight and see if there is anything else to go into the "Giveaway' pile.

For an old friend of my husband.... they just had their first child, a baby girl. She is gorgeous, and seems so tiny (3kg). It is all relative really, isn't it....

This is the first attempt at a Disappearing 9 Patch quilt. To be honest, I don't know what the 'rules' of this quilt are. I didn't spin my pieces once they were cut, just re-placed them as I wanted the bicycles to be upright. I ordered this fabric from Fabricworm. It arrived about a week after ordering, not bad at all.....

I also appliqued a little all-in-one for the new baby.

Well I certainly didn't expect to finish a quilt so quickly.... well it still took about a month, but not too bad for me. James is very happy, so we are all smiles here. Now I can move on and quickly make a pram quilt for some friends who had a baby girl, and some little presents for my sister who is due to have a baby any day now.

James has just turned 5. Layla is now one and a half. We have been thinking what we can do about the bedroom situation when it is time for Layla to go into a big bed. Personally I am hoping to get at least another year out of her sleeping in the cot. She sleeps really well in a cot and I just don't want to risk having the sleeping problems that we had with James when he was moved into a big bed.

So far, our solution is to wait until James is 6 and then buy him a semi-loft style bed - not as tall as a normal bunk, but with a pull out desk and drawers underneath for extra storage. And of course Layla will get James' old bed (with trundle for any accidental falls out of bed).

I figured that I would give myself a nice long amount of time to make them both some new quilts for their beds. I ordered this fabric from - Lizzy House Castle Peeps. It arrived quickly and as James is extremely impatient, I thought I should whip up something to keep him going until the quilt is finished (hmmm, in a year???).

Bunting is now in place and he is happy..... although he can't understand why I am not letting him pull it down to use as a "Finish Line" for races...boys....

First up, James asked me to make him a new hat as his old one (that I made) is getting too small. It is true. However he does have another 6 or so caps to choose from, I am not sure just how necessary it was...... oh well, it is always nice to think your children value the sewing you do.

This hat was made using the Make it Perfect pattern.

As a contrast, this is the cap that Layla is fond of at the moment (preferably worn backwards).

And finally, some PJ pants for James. Did he really need them? No. Did he ask for them? No. I was just keen to use the Michael Miller flannelette fabric before he was too tall for the 0.5m piece of fabric I had in my stash.

There has been plenty more going on here, but I think I will spread it out over a few posts. Coming up, The Craft Room meet, a scarf, some bunting, the start of a single bed quilt, clothes for me (multiples)...... stay tuned.

Sock Monkey

So I managed to get to the Craft and Quilt Fair in Sydney yesterday (was it yesterday, my weekend is a blur). THe kids were off at the Powerhouse Museum with their Daddy, so I had a good 2 hours to roam). I was surprised that I could have done with another half hour or so. Some of the work in the quilts on display were absolutely amazing...... some of those women noted how long they were working on them for...... 4 years!!! But truly amazing.

The only thing that disappoints me is that the quilting styles were still very traditional. I think they need a bit of young blood in there. Not that I don't appreciate the work that goes in to ANY quilt.

Anyway, while I was there I managed to spend some $$, not too much though. I picked up a kit to make 2 sock monkeys. One is almost complete (needs a pompom for his hat), but he had his photo taken anyway. I think he might need some pants too......

Eeeekkkkkk...... feeling a little bit special

My Mother-in-Law just returned from a trip to Europe. It was a whirlwind tour, but she made the most of it.
On her return, she presented me with this.....

She said it was for my birthday, Christmas, etc etc. I was getting a little bit excited.

So I opened up the protective bag and found this....

Pictures are bad, but it is a Christian Dior Black Patent New Lock bag. Not something I would ever buy for myself (well $$$ may have been an issue) but for some reason I love it. I have no idea when I will use it. But I will use it. My Sister-in-Law was given another bag from the range - equally as nice.

A lot of thoughts have been running through my head since my Mother-in-Law gave me the bag. It might sound strange, but I feel as though I am truly accepted into the family. I have been feeling this more and more over the past couple of years. It is hard to marry into any family I am sure, but is especially hard to marry into a Chinese family. Although my Mother-in-Law has never said so, I am sure she would have preferred that her son marry a Chinese girl, rather than a loud-ish Australian. She only has one daughter, so it is often difficult as the Daughter-in-Law to feel as valued as the daughter of the family. But I have been noticing the last few years that my sister-in-law and I are always given very similar presents. We are really treated equally.

Expensive gifts are not important to me, but I guess it is what is symbolises that is important to me.

She also gave me a Longchamp bag (which I did use today)..... I love it.

Something I Acquired....

This is not something I was ever looking for. As much as I love sewing, I am trying really hard not to add the already huge amount of 'stuff' we have in this house.

But about 2 years ago, while my husband and I were in the process of swapping houses with my mother-in-law, I came across this......

I have absolutely no idea of the history of it. I believe my ex-stepfather-in-law picked it up from a garage sale of some sort.... he was a massive hoarder. My mother-in-law had no use for it and was going to donate it to the Salvation Army. I just couldn't let her give it away.

So until last week it stood in a corner in the study. My husband insisted that we finally put it on display. So, for the most part it will be covered. But when special guests come over, we will whip the cover off....... haha, aren't they lucky!!

It has been 3 years since we last travelled to Hong Kong, and it was such a nightmare I thought I would never travel with children again. Obviously my memory fails me at the most important times (like when booking flights over the internet....)
I actually think James will be fine this time (he is a TV/DVD addict). Layla is a PRETTY good girl, but she is only 16 months, so who knows.
We only live about 15 minutes drive from the airport, which is normally great for travel. However our flight leaves at 7.30am...... hmmm... somehow I don't think living close to the airport is really going to help that much.

Just thought I would post a pic (make that 3) from our last trip to Hong Kong. My gosh he was already a devil, but so cute looking....

Erica B's Question.....

I am a little embarrassed that a question I posed to Erica Bunker ended up becoming the topic for her latest blog post. I have been following Erica's blog for a few years now. She makes amazing clothes using commercial patterns and adjusting them to fit herself perfectly. Very stylish indeed.

I asked Erica what she wore day to day, and of course she wears all the lovely clothes she makes. But I guess my lifestyle at the moment (stay at home Mum to 2 little ones) just wouldn't 'pull-off' the style of clothes Erica is making. Not to say that I don't have nice clothes, because I do. Some purchased and some made. As much as I haven't been blogging the clothes that I have been making lately, I have been sewing a bit over this past Summer. These last few months I have made a maxi dress, another short 'going out' dress, a Shearwater Kaftan, another loose top. And all of them are in high rotation in my wardrobe (which is very satisfying).

My motivation for sewing my own clothes recently has been a lack of $$ since having Layla. And since I don't think I will be returning to work in the near future, I will continue to sew where I can.

If only I could source 'decent' dress fabrics for womenswear for a reasonable price. There are a couple of places that I like to shop in Sydney, but sometimes it is impossible to find fabric that is 'just right', that won't break the bank. And I do one day aspire to exhibit some style on a daily basis, rather than just on special occasions. Thank you Erica for giving me something to work towards.

And just a pic of the 'focus' of my life at the moment..... normally there are some grubby hands to mess up my clothes, but they are looking their best here.....

Baby Girl and her Big Brother....

Layla is 15 months old now. Been walking since she turned 12 months. But she still only has 2 teeth...... so because of that I can still call her my Baby Girl.

A few weeks ago I was in the kitchen and noticed Layla looking in the book case. She proceeded to pull out 2 books, carried them over to James' craft table, climb up onto a chair and started 'reading'. I just thought it was delightful.

Of course then James walked in and wanted to read to her.....

As much as he is a handful, he is a great big brother. I wish I had a big brother like James when I was little...

Chinese New Year wrap up....

James and I walked through a Chinese New Year event on our way to see Wicked. My boy has a love of Drama, and had been talking about Wicked since we were in Melbourne 18 months ago and he picked up a brochure. When the production came to Sydney, I thought I should give in to his persistence and take him to see the show. He really did enjoy it and sat still through the entire show. On our way back to the train, we saw these lovely Chinese lanterns.

Then last week we headed into the city to check out some of the Dragon Boat races. Considering they were held on the same day as Mardi Gras, the city was buzzing.....

The Big 1-0

My husband and I celebrated 10 years of marriage last month. I married a good guy. He is still a good guy. And now a great Dad.
We have had a few expenses this year, so we promised each other that we wouldn't buy anything for each other. Of course that didn't mean no card......

When Alex presented me with a card in an envelope, I had a little chuckle. When I opened it, I laughed out loud. We had bought each other the exact same brand of card. Quite unique cards, in that they were made out of bamboo. I am glad I married an arty type.....

The Wonderful Cheekybeaks Giveaway

I was over the moon to find out that I had won the fantastic giveaway that Kristen (now found at Kristen Doran Design) had on her blog before Christmas. I first met Kristen about 2 years ago at a little local market that we were both at. She is a lovely person who just happens to be extremely talented as well. I found out that I had won on a day when we were told that our computer needed replacing, just before Christmas, so I was a little down..... it certainly turned my mood around!

Finally I can post pictures of what I was lucky enough to receive from Kristen. When the package arrived all the little bits seemed to be scattered all around the house. James claimed a toy soldier, the tea towel went straight to the kitchen, the advent calender went to the sewing machine, and was then hung in the playroom, and the table runner went straight to the coffee table (oh and a soldier went to a friend who had a baby boy). So it has taken me a while to gather everything back up again, wash the teatowel etc. But here is it. Happy New Year to you all. I was so busy sewing leading up to Christmas that I didn't get a chance to blog everything I made. Or the fantastic giveway that I was luck to win from Kristen (let me tell you, it made my month). So I will get around to that ASAP.

Unfortunately with 2 little kids and noone to look after them, New Year Eve was spent at home. I did make an effort to watch the fireworks on TV though.

We have started 2010 with a relatively tidy house, which is a nice change. And in particular, I worked hard on my sewing room over the break and am really liking the way it is looking at the moment. I look forward to a lot of sewing this year, especially since Alex bought me a cutting table for Christmas - yay no more bad back!!

A Finished Project - Yay!!

Actually, I have quite a few projects that I have completed but not blogged, but this one is has me feeling pleased that I have finally added some nice touches to the house.

We have been living here for about 1.5 years now, and felt such a sense of relief to have the renovations completed and to be settled in that we kind of just stopped...... We bought a new lounge and I had wanted to live with it for a while to see how it fit in with the rest of our furniture before adding any throw cushions. It was for the same reason that we didn't hang any pictures until recently.....we just had to live here for a while first.

When I decided it was time to accessorise, I went back to King Furniture to look for throw cushions. At $600 for 4 cushions (as lovely as they were), I had to find an alternative. So, using a few of the pieces of fabric that I picked up at the Stitches and Craft Show (Lara Cameron), and some of my stash (generally from Kristen Doran)...... I have finally completed the project. The lounge is very large, so quite a few cushions are required.

I am not sure what other people (or stylists) would think, but each of these fabrics makes me happy to look at them so I think they will stay in place for a while yet.

Stitches and Craft Show

Last Friday Layla and I made our way over to the Stitches and Craft Show at Rosehill Gardens. We both had a great time. Layla, interacting with all the lovely ladies who took an interest in her. And me, looking at all the lovely fabric and chatting to some lovely ladies myself.

I bought a few things that I am very happy with. Fabric panels (destined for cushions for our lounge) from Ink and Spindle, an Apple pin cushion and Baby Ruffle pants pattern from Tutti Frutti, some hair clips from Please Elouise, another Cuckoo panel from Cheeky Beaks, and a quilt pattern from Audrey and Maude (for James one day) . I am not sure how busy it would have been on the weekend, but I was really happy with how cruisey the atmosphere was on Friday.

A Hat for Oma

One day (a couple of years back, mind you) I realised that my Oma never wore a hat. She said it was because her head was too big for most hats. At the time I was studying millinery and promised to make her a hat. A couple of years down the track, using a commercial pattern, she finally got her hat. I was pretty happy with the construction and the pattern is 'almost' lined up. Oh well, will try again for the next hat.

I must say, she was very happy to finally have the hat, and apparently showed it off to all her friends, haha.

Coldplay in Sydney

Alex and I managed to get tickets to Coldplay when they were in Sydney in March. We had been to their last concert 2.5 years ago and it was brilliant, so we were quite excited.

Our seats were OK. Not the best, but pretty good. Well that is what we thought until about 3/4 of the way through the show when all of a sudden a 'mini-stage' started to unfold right across the aisle from where we were sitting. We were beside ourselves with excitement. The band played 3 songs (I think), within spitting distance of where we were. In fact we could see the sweat dripping off Chris Martin.....not that I minded at all.

Dress for Eden

There hasn't been much sewing going on in this house for a while.....I have been preoccupied with a new baby and organising a 15 year high school reunion (which was held 2 weeks ago).

But I did manage to sew up an Ottobre tunic for 1 year old Eden - the little sister of one of James' good friends, Zoe.

It was a fantastic pattern to sew up, so I made one for Layla too.

I have been quite bad with blogging again...new baby and all that. But I have to come in to say a belated thank you to some very lovely girls from my EB sewing group (haven't been posting in there much lately either...)

Firstly, a big thanks to Joy for the lovely dress and hat she made for Layla... so gorgeous!

Then the lovely Cass made a rabbit and a Peter Rabbit cushion for Layla.....which goes perfectly with her Peter Rabbit quilt that my Mum made for her. Layla isn't a baby that likes to just lay in her cot, but this cushion really keeps her interest.

We also received a gorgeous little dress from Novy, I can't wait until she fits into it . It is just so cute!

And last but not least, the beautiful wall letters made especially by Lisa

A Layla Update

Just thought I should post a new picture of Layla, since she has had her eyes closed in the others. She looks very much like her brother when he was a baby, but he was a bit chubbier. She is filling out though, putting on weight quiet nicely. We are loving having a girl around.

Christmas with our Family

Well, not the whole family. James is convinced that there are 5 people in our family....4 humans and one cat (Millie). Mille had to stay at home on Christmas Day, but the rest of us headed to my parents place for a lovely Christmas lunch.

Introducing Miss Layla Jade

Layla Jade was born on Sunday the 7th of December 2008 at 3.29am weighing 3.3kg and 51cm long.

She is very easy so far, just sleeping and feeding. No dramas.

The Long Awaited Update

Hmmm, 2 months since my last post....quite terrible really.

Anyway, I have a couple of pictures to share of things made, etc etc.

1. The little patchwork quilt that I completed earlier this year is now in place in the Moses Basket, ready for our baby girl to be born. Only 6 weeks to go now. Although with the crazy weather we have been having, I doubt she will need anything other than a sheet to cover her at night.

2. Next a little dress that I made for above baby girl using the Oliver + S Swingset Tunic Pattern. I added an extra band at the bottom to make it 'dress length'. This is still awaiting a button or two at the back, it has just been so long since I did a button hole that I have lost confidence!

3. Next, the Amy Butler Birdie Sling Bag.
I love the fabric, but don't love the way the handle attaches to the bag.....maybe I just didn't follow the instructions correctly. Anyone else had any problems with it?

4. James all ready for the Kindy Farm visit at daycare....he actually fed the animals this year. He really is growing up. Although, the way he freaked out at the noise of the water going down the drain after his bath tonight, it makes me wonder sometimes, haha...

I had better leave it at that for now. Next post will include a picture of James' Halloween outfit for daycare. I don't 'get' Halloween at daycare, but I can't let him miss out.

Bledisloe Cup

Let's forget the most recent game held in NZ.....

I will just say that we had a great night at the Sydney game LAST week. It was James' first time to see the Wallabies play. Leading up to the game James asked "Who is playing?" and I told him "The Wallabies and the All Blacks".
He told me he hadn't see the All Blacks before, and I pointed out that he actullay hasn't see the Wallabies either. To which he replied, "Yes I have". When I asked where, he told me he had seen them at the zoo!!! Silly Mummy!!

Anyway, he had a good time and lasted until the end of the game.

A Day Out with Dad

Alex took the day off from work today and we made it down to Cronulla for some lunch and a little walk.

Today we ventured onto the sand looking for shells. It was simple, but lovely.

Another Year....

I recently celebrated my birthday, argh, another year gone.

Last year Alex went all out and bought me a new sewing machine. I wasn't very happy with him as he spent way too much money on a very particular purchase (I am sounding soooo ungrateful now....)

I have always tried to make him realise that I don't need a lot of money spent on gifts...they just need to be the 'right' gifts, haha.

Well this year he did REALLY well. He stopped off at Newtown on his way home from work one night and bought me a great little felted pouch,

a softies kit,

some fabulous seats to an upcoming Whitlams concert

and a brilliant card (that I can't stop talking about).

I was so excited my these presents. He made my day! Thanks Alex!!

James the Builder???

I went with Bob, as I realised it required the least amount of effort from me, haha.I made a 'tool belt'. James was very happy with it indeed.

Play Rug for Baby

Well, I bought the charm squares for this quilt a while back from www.fatquartershop.com. I was going to make a little dolls quilt for my niece. But when I saw it made up I couldn't part with the quilt. It has been moved to the drawer containing little girl baby clothes in anticipation of my next ultrasound (a week away) to find out what the sex of the baby is. If it is another little boy, I will have a few little presents to pass on to any girls that are born in the near future....

I'm Back

Not too much to say really, but I thought I should post to keep the blog 'active'.

Lately I have been busy with being pregnant (15 weeks), James' 3rd birthday, settling into the new house, and so on....

I have finished a baby play rug which I will blog later. Otherwise I had better get sewing, or my machine will get stiff from not enough use.

Better Late Than Never....

Hi,
It has been a while, but I am back. We have renovated and moved into a new (for us) house. We are on one level (previously 2) and I am loving it. One less thing I have to worry about with my accident prone son.

I think I will just update with Easter for this post....

James had an Easter Hat Parade at daycare so we/I made a hat for him. As with his daycare Christmas party last year, the temperature was ridiculously hot that day, so the hat didn't stay on for long...

We also made our way to the Easter Show again this year. We spent the morning on our own and then met up with family for a few hours....it was a long day.

The farmyard nursery this year was fantastic. James chose a Hi-5 showbag, and his Uncle gave him a hat from the Coke bag....he looked pretty cool!
